Scary Birth Defects caused by Chemical Weapons
In the early 60's, the US military chemists were ahead of their time. They invented a very terrible chemical weapon, which was successfully used during the Vietnam War. The most awful and effective was Agent Orange, which terrified local residents. This type of weapon was a chemical mixture of the most dangerous substances that were dispersed round the country. During the war, nearly 20 million gallons of this mixture were used, that polluted almost 5 million acres of fertile soil. This drug caused injuries, killed more than 400 thousand people, and half a million of children were born with limited opportunities or diseases. It is worth adding that many of the babies were not Vietnamese, but the children of Americans. And yes, the military had to sacrifice even their children in order to achieve the greatest effect. It was later revealed that this chemical weapon had a side effect in the form of the appearance of tumors, cancer and rashes all over the body, but while it kills "evil enemies" it does not bother anyone.
Death in the Form of "Ace of Spades"
Ace of spades is one of the most common superstitions that came from the US soldiers during the war. What was it like? The thing was that soldiers told that the Vietnamese are very afraid of this card and consider it a sign of death. Naturally, everything was far from that and the Vietnamese people treated this card in exactly the same way as their opponents and it did not arouse any special emotions. But this did not stop the soldiers from the USA, who had printed thousands of such cards in order to intimidate the enemy. Firstly they just left them on the battlefield, and then they put them on the corpses. Thus, the fictional myth became a real fact, which made the local people to associate the ace of spades with death, murders and American soldiers. Because of those cards the US Army warriors themselves got a powerful weapon for intimidation and demoralization of their opponent.
Another way to inspire fear
Do you think that the strange reception with the cards was the only way in which soldiers of the US Army frightened their opponents? Naturally, this is far from the case. During the war, one real fear of the local people was used, the one which comes from their religion. Local people believe that non-buried soul of a man will forever wander around the earth. The US military decided to bring this idea for the local residents in a literal sense. For this they took down and switched the record on in the forest. This audio recording contained strange sounds that mimicked something "otherworldly", it was so-called "Wandering Soul". The audio was played in the forest and it had to scare the local soldiers who "understood" that if they die in the war and are non-buried, then their souls will face the same fate. It was a very cheap and effective trick that allowed the military to drive a hundred enemy soldiers crazy. It was used throughout most part of the war.
The secret message from a prisoner
Before men go to war, they are preparing to a probable death in captivity. One can only imagine in what moral and physical condition they are, people who are captured, especially as they are tortured, beaten and often held in inhuman conditions. The Vietnam War wasn't an exception in this regard. All the soldiers of the US Army, who were captured, were constantly suffered from torture and pain. Nevertheless, among them was one young man, who was forced to tell in front of the camera that they all were well and kept in normal conditions. But he told this only in order to survive, but at the same time he managed to hide the word "torture" on the Morse code, which made it known that in fact his words were nothing more than a lie that he was forced to say. This man was Jeremiah Denton, who successfully withdrew from this captivity and later became one of the senators who represented Alabama. He died at the age of 82 in 2014. Thanks to him, the world got confirmation of the presence of tortures, which were used against American soldiers in Vietnam.
200 Vietnamese against one of Navy SEAL team
How many people can one well-trained soldier kill, until they kill him? The answer to this question was received during the Vietnam War, when two detachments of Navy SEALs were sent to fight with the enemies. They had better statistics on the ratio of murders and of their killed soldiers. To one dead member of the detachment there were 200 dead enemies. It is disturbing but a person who has been well trained can very easily cope with a huge number of ordinary people who have not undergone any specialized training. Of course, the fact that Navy SEALs had better equipment due to the time, with which even the armies of other developed countries, not to mention Vietnam, could not be compared. Nevertheless, war is always a difficult matter, especially when the number of trained members of the detachment exceeded several hundred. The training of SEALs has been lasting for a long time, during which time they lived and studied in very dangerous conditions. This made of them real machines for killing.
About 100,000 people were hiding in Canada
The best way to endure the war and stay unharmed was one through which you do not participate in the war at all. This rule was properly understood by 125 thousand of Americans who fled from fulfilling their military duty to Canada. For the country, these people became fugitives who refused to help it in "liberating Vietnam." It is natural that during the war there were many controversies even inside the state, but still no one was going to finish it for several years. Unfortunately, the US authorities did not ask young and healthy people about their political views before they were taken to fight against the communist regime in Vietnam. All escaped people had the possibility to come back home only when President Carter took office and gave the appropriate order for an amnesty. Nearly the half of the fugitives instantly took advantage of this chance and decided to steer clear of the participation in the opposition.
On average 2 or 3 years were spent in battles
Only films can demonstrate the incessant shooting and fighting between enemies. In fact, this is not so. Most of actions in the wars go through small armed clashes, between which soldiers just sit on the base waiting for another order. For example, the First World War was marked by 40 days of struggle, and all the rest of the time was given to tactical maneuvers and waiting for actions from the enemy. Yes, it was a bloody and brutal war, but most of the soldiers were mainly in the trenches. In this sense, the war in Vietnam is very different, because the fighting between the opposing sides occurred on average 240 days a year. It was a very busy time. The soldiers were constantly frightened by the possibility of a surprise attack and did not have the opportunity to devote their own time to proper rest or other needs. This could not but affect the moral and physical condition of both sides, which were exhausted by constant fighting.
Imperfect M16 became a fail
Assault rifles have been developed by both Russia and the United States long ago. The first had AK-47, the second M16. As a result, it turned out that these two rifles were first used in one territory during the Vietnam War. At the same time, the US military honestly admitted that their M16 were so bad that they would not risk entrusting their lives to them. Therefore, they often took from enemies their better AK-47s and did not hesitate to talk about it. At the time of the outbreak of war in Vietnam, the M16 was only at an early stage of development, so the soldiers were not too willing to take it for the task, because the weapons had so many design flaws. If soldiers could obtain the rifle of the enemy, then they did not part with it. At the same time, everyone recognized that the AK-47 was a much better rifle, which was adapted for war and met all the requirements of the soldiers.
Necklace of human ears
Disgusting and terrible things happened during every war and both sides become their perpetrators. One of the most terrible examples of the Vietnam War was the division of American paratroopers "Tiger Force", which, in addition to killing soldiers, was also engaged in the killing of civilians. The group consisted of 45 well-trained paratroopers, who served the US during this war. Nevertheless, one should not forget about their crimes. They often took scalps from the killed soldiers, and made necklaces out of their ears. Also, the detachment was often used to kidnaping and torturing people, which was illegal even at the war time. In addition, the group constantly murdered civilians, including women and children. Despite the large number of victims, these sadists were not punished for their crimes and the US authorities simply "closed their eyes" to everything that was happening on the territory of Vietnam. Oh yes, it's also worth recalling that once when they were under drugs, they raped and killed one local woman, and cut off her child's head.
If you are lucky once to get to Vietnam, then you will ensure by yourself that the majority of the inhabitants of this country will talk about the past war as an American war, which simply unfolded on their territory. In the minds of these people there is much about the truth, because in fact Vietnam has become just a battlefield for Russia and the United States, which decided to "test their weapons" in the territory of this Asian country. Nevertheless, as a result of the conflict, most of the local people died, so they unequivocally suffered huge losses, estimated in millions. Speaking about politics, during the whole twenty years of confrontation, in the US they did not say that there was a war, that is, they did not want to officially recognize this fact. Therefore, throughout the entire period of the struggle in Vietnam, the whole process was generally called "conflict." A convenient position for the authorities, is not it?
Victims of war were 8 American women
Watching military movies and reading books to many people give the erroneous idea that girls stay away and do not participate in battles during the war. There are more and more women join to the army every year. We live in a time when people have the right to do almost everything they want, regardless of their race, religious views and sex. More than 7,500 American women took part in the Vietnam War mostly working as nurses, but this position is no less significant than the soldiers. Unfortunately, 8 of them did not survive the war because of illness, or they were killed by enemies or other tragic circumstances. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial contains the names of those women who did not manage to see the end of this war. Their names were immortalized there due to the order of the government of the country. This fact helps to remember that women are as brave and noble as men.
Superglue as the best remedy to stop bleeding
The troops of both sides had to live in terrible conditions of hot climate, complete lack of hygiene and many exotic diseases, and at the same time the people constantly participated in battles and shootings. Naturally, in such conditions, it was difficult to have proper wounds healing and soldiers often received infection. Moreover, it took a very long time to get to the doctor. Therefore, the US military began using Superglue in order to stop bleeding. It sounds strange and even disgusting, but it was really the only way to survive in this terrible war. Also, it can be considered as a good advertisement for manufacturers of this glue, as it was used for medical purposes, then it was really a quality product! Replacing the glue they could have used some other product that caused the stop of bleeding, but they chose the Superglue, because the conditions during the war in Vietnam were very complicated and forced people to use everything possible and to make non-standard decisions.
More than 60% of military were volunteers
People do a lot of strange things by their own willing. For example, once I signed to take care of neighboring dogs. But the war in Vietnam is of a completely different level of events in which volunteers participate. Two thirds of the people who went there revealed the desire to help the country and solve the problem in Vietnam voluntary. Of course, the United States propaganda couldn't have remained this data without attention. Moreover, most of the people who survived in this war do not regret their choice. 74% of veterans of this war believe that they would go there again in order to serve the country, if there was a need. 91% of them admitted that they decided to take part in this war as volunteers. It is absolutely possible that these data have been adjusted by the authorities, but it is certain that many veterans perceive their participation as a feat and certainly would not want to change their choice if they had the opportunity.
China Supported the Vietnamese Communists
The organizations of NVA and Viet Cong were communist and wanted to gain control all over the country. Naturally, the rest of the world, where the power was appropriated by the Communists, helped them to achieve the desired goal. For example, Vietnam received so much military aid from China that this would be enough to unleash a new war. Vietnamese people received almost 2 million weapons and about a billion bullets from China. In addition, NVA received all the assistance that was needed by this organization. China has transferred nearly 600 cars and 164 aircraft to the Vietnam and all in order to make sure that there would be the victory of communism in the territory of this country. From this we can conclude that the Vietnamese side of the conflict was not so weak, as one might have thought, even if compare the country's ability with its adversary one of which was an economically developed country - the USA.
During the war there were killed 1.3 up to 3.9 million people
Constant battles, the use of chemical weapons and other deadly methods of mass murder could not but lead to a huge number of victims. Even historians cannot accurately estimate the number of deaths, but most of them converge to the figure from 1.3 up to 3.9 million people, which is really huge. Among civilians, more than half a million people were killed, and the US troops killed up to 200,000 of them. Naturally, they are far from angels. More than 50,000 Americans died in this war, and more than 1,500 still remain in the status of the missing. Nevertheless, NVA and Viet Cong suffered much more losses. According to historians, more than a million of Vietnamese Communists were killed by their allies. Such a huge number prove the complete stupidity and senselessness of the war. So, how many must the military and civilian death be to understand this very simple truth?
